A child in a costume stands beside a ghost and a glowing jack-o'-lantern, the kind of scene that made early twentieth-century Halloween postcards so popular. Cards like this were often mailed in the weeks before October 31, when the holiday was still becoming a national custom in the United States and printers were turning out bright, stylized designs in large numbers. The jack-o'-lantern is worth a closer look: carved pumpkins were an older tradition than the orange-and-black candy-and-costume holiday we know today, and many of these cards helped standardize the imagery that still appears on porches each fall.
