Dressed in a loose white Pierrot smock with a ruffled collar, the child in this card grips a carved jack-o'-lantern as if it were a prize. The Pierrot, a stock figure of the pantomime stage, was a popular choice for costume parties and Halloween dress-ups in the early twentieth century, when printers turned out cards like this one by the thousand. Postcards of the period often mixed sentimental portraits of children with seasonal symbols such as pumpkins, black cats and harvest colors. The card's appeal lies in that blend of theatrical costume and folk custom, which was part of how Halloween took shape as a family holiday in America.
