A witch, a jack-o'-lantern and a black cat share the frame in this Halloween greetings postcard, a combination that became the standard visual shorthand for the holiday in the early twentieth century. Holiday postcards of this kind were mass-produced and mailed by the millions in the years before and after 1910, when the picture postcard craze peaked. Designers often rendered the scene in bright inks with exaggerated, cheerful figures, turning a folk custom tied to autumn and the harvest into a light, sociable message for friends and family.
