Few holiday motifs have aged as steadily as the witch, the jack-o'-lantern and the black cat, and this postcard gathers all three into a single scene of late-night mischief. Halloween greeting cards like this one were a staple of the early twentieth century, when printers turned out large runs of brightly colored designs for people to mail to friends and family each autumn. The pairing of a broomstick-riding witch with a carved pumpkin and a glaring black cat drew on older folk beliefs about cats and witches, which had by then been softened into playful decoration. Cards of this kind show how the holiday moved from local custom toward the commercial celebration people know today.
