Flying witches and bats fill the frame of this Halloween greetings card, a motif that became a staple of holiday postcards in the early 1900s. Printers of the period often used bold orange, black and yellow palettes and whimsical figures to make the holiday seem playful rather than frightening. Cards like this were sent among friends and family during the autumn season, and they show how Halloween was shifting from older harvest and folk customs toward the lighthearted, costume-filled celebration many people recognize today. Look closely at the witches' crooked hats and the moon behind them, which are standard features of the era's illustrated greetings.
