A jolly pumpkin, dressed up and grinning, anchors this Halloween greeting card, with its companion vegetables gathered around as if at a harvest party. Cards like this one belong to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, when American and European printers turned the autumn harvest into a cheerful holiday theme. Personifying produce as lively characters was a popular device, and it helped soften the more eerie side of Halloween for families and children. The bright colors and cheerful faces show how the holiday was shifting from its older folk roots toward the playful, sentimental style of greeting cards.
