A boy sprints across the card with a jack-o'-lantern held out in front of him, a sheet-white ghost drifting close behind as if giving chase. Postcards like this one were produced in large numbers in the early 1900s, when Halloween was shifting from neighborhood pranks toward a family holiday built around costumes, party games and decorated homes. The bright colors, cartoonish faces and playful motion were meant to make a quick note feel festive, and the pairing of a child with a friendly ghost reflects the lighter, less frightening tone that greeting-card makers favored for the holiday.
