A witch in a tall pointed hat rides across an orange moon beside a black cat, with pumpkins sitting in the foreground, all set against a dark night sky. Cards like this were a staple of the early twentieth century, when Halloween was shifting from farm-and-neighborhood revelry toward the commercial holiday we know now. Publishers printed them in large runs, and the bold color and bright lettering of the greeting were meant to read quickly in a shop window or a mailbox. Look at the witch and cat in the picture: their stock imagery of broomsticks, moons and jack-o'-lanterns became the visual shorthand for the holiday.
