Heathcliff, haunted by a crowd of faces, is the subject of this wood engraving by Fritz Eichenberg, an artist known for his book illustrations. Emily Brontë's *Wuthering Heights*, published in 1847, is built on hauntings, most famously Catherine's ghost pleading at the window and Heathcliff's conviction that the dead remain near. Eichenberg's stark black-and-white blocks suit the novel's bleak moors and restless spirits, which is why the image works well for a Halloween display. The caption card gives no date, so the print is best read as an illustration of the novel rather than a record of a particular edition.
