A phantom vessel takes center stage in "Ye ghost ship," a wood engraving whose title promises a tale of the uncanny at sea. The caption card ties the scene to New Haven, Connecticut, and to the year 1647, less than a decade after Puritan settlers founded the town in 1638, when its harbor was already a working port. The engraving comes from *Pictures of Old New Haven*, a collection that mixed local history with imagery, though the card records no date or artist. Ghost ships like this one belong to a long seafaring tradition in which unseen crews and lost vessels were believed to haunt coastal waters.
