Few buildings in New England are as closely tied to the 1692 witch trials as the house on Essex Street that became known as the Witch House. Built in 1675, it belonged to the magistrate Jonathan Corwin, who sat in judgment on accused witches and questioned some of them in its rooms. By about 1911, when this view was made, the old timber-framed house was a point of interest for tourists and was partly occupied by antique dealers, as the subject heading notes. The Detroit Photographic Company, which issued many picture-postcard-style views of American towns, sold such images to visitors eager to see Salem's historic sites.
