The picture shows three witches gathered over a bubbling cauldron, with a horned figure that may be a devil hovering overhead, though the record leaves that identification uncertain. The image is a photograph of an original drawing, made in 1940 for the New York World-Telegram and Sun's newspaper files. Witches stirring a cauldron became a stock Halloween image in the early twentieth century, drawing on the kettle scene in Shakespeare's *Macbeth*, and newspapers often ran such art for autumn features.
