Newmann's Wonderful Spirit Mysteries puts a performer's name and the promise of the supernatural at the center of its bold lettering, the kind of pitch built to catch a passerby's eye in 1911. Spirit entertainments of that era drew on the wide public fascination with spiritualism, séances, and claimed contact with the dead, and they played in theaters and traveling halls alike. Posters were the main advertising for such shows, so their dramatic imagery was meant to draw a crowd from the street. Today the piece fits naturally among Halloween material, since the holiday has long been tied to ghosts and the uncanny.
